St. Peter's this year we are proud to be joining the "I Walk with Opal" Challenge! This annual challenge commemorates Dr. Lee’s powerful 1,400-mile walk from Fort Worth, TX, to Washington, DC. Completed in 2.5-mile increments, her journey represents the 2.5-year delay in the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. From September 1, 2016, to January 10, 2017, Dr. Lee walked to bring national attention to Juneteenth, carrying over 1.6 million petition signatures—an effort that ultimately helped Juneteenth become a federally recognized holiday. This meaningful event invites all to collectively walk 1,400 miles in honor of Dr. Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth."
